When one's delusions become more powerful, they become harder to control. Three reprobates-The Greatest Swordsman in the World, a murderous Kleptic, and possibly the only sane man left-have their own nefarious plans for the young god.Īs these forces converge on the boy, there's one more obstacle: time is running out. A god they can control.īut there are many who would see this would-be-god in their thrall, including the High Priest's own Doppels, and a Slaver no one can resist. He defines the beliefs of his followers, leading their faith to one end: a young boy, Morgen, must Ascend to become a god. High Priest Konig seeks to create order from chaos. Violent and dark, the world is filled with the Geisteskranken-men and women whose delusions manifest, twisting reality. But insanity is a weapon, conviction a shield. Common knowledge isn't an axiom, it's a force of nature. Faith shapes the landscape, defines the laws of physics, and makes a mockery of truth. The caged virgin book5/21/2023 Lamson's first-hand account illustrates how penitentiaries too often use prison education as another means of control. Set in the late 1990s-a time when the city was rapidly changing into an increasingly corporatized and policed space- Caged exposes a criminal justice system designed to thwart efforts to rehabilitate and educate the incar-cerated. Rikers Island resonates as a place of horrific violence and inescapable punishment, one of the last places in America that truly invoke overwhelming, universal fear. Why was he risking his life every day at a prison notorious for being one of the most dangerous places to work? Was it his small way of making amends for the blatant and pervasive racism he witnessed every day growing up in his small Southern town? Or was it to prove he wasn't afraid to go where his own father, a prominent District Court judge, had sent both the innocent and guilty alike? In Caged, Lamson provides an intimate view of his transformative experience teaching inmate students on Rikers Island. When Brandon Dean Lamson first accepted the teaching position at Horizon Academy, a court-mandated academic program for eighteen- to twenty-year-old prisoners at Rikers Island, even he had to question his own motivation. An honest and gripping memoir of one man's life-altering experience teaching at Rikers Island. Goodreads lincoln in the bardo5/21/2023 “Bardo” is the Tibetan Buddhist name for a transition period between death and rebirth and seems to indicate, in this case, the bizarre purgatory inhabited by these ghosts. Saunders intercuts facts and semi-facts (culled from books and news accounts) in a collage-like narrative with some ghost stories of his own imagining, allowing a chorus of disembodied spirits to describe Lincoln’s visits, while babbling on about their own regrets and misplaced dreams. 20, 1862, and the grief-stricken president’s visits to the crypt where his son was interred at the Oak Hill Cemetery in nearby Georgetown. “Lincoln in the Bardo” takes, as its jumping-off point, the death of Abraham Lincoln’s beloved 11-year-old son, Willie, who succumbed to typhoid fever on Feb. And then, to make things stranger, populate the rest of the scene with some Edward Gorey-style ghosts, skittering across the landscape - at once menacing, comical and slightly tongue-in-cheek. Add a tall, sad mourner, grieving over his recently deceased son. Picture, as a backdrop, one of those primitively drawn 19th-century mourning paintings with rickety white gravestones and age-worn monuments standing under the faded green canopy of a couple of delicately sketched trees. George Saunders’s much-awaited first novel, “Lincoln in the Bardo,” is like a weird folk art diorama of a cemetery come to life. LINCOLN IN THE BARDO By George Saunders 343 pages. Valour and vanity5/21/2023 If you wanted to use this style in your home, you could do something like this. I, for one, wouldn’t mind coming home to that one bit. Ornate archways reach up to their vaulted ceiling. Outside the glass walls, the landscape appears perhaps a bit more vivid than it would in real life–a relief from their claustrophobic dreariness. A fire warms the place up and allows them to cook dinner. Their bed stayed its same old wooden self, but they made the floor appear as if it were a gray stone. Vincent turns their small, low-ceilinged room into a beautiful orangery with views of the countryside. You know I’m a big believer in decorating your home to lift your spirits. After staying in a downright dreary small room for their apartment, they use glamour (super cool illusion-making magic) to make their hopefully temporary home look better than it seems. In the book, Jane and Vincent face all kinds of trials after they lose all of their money and are stranded in Murano. I completely enjoyed it, and you all should, too. Last week I finished Valour and Vanity by Mary Robinette Kowal.
